Since 2005, St Aloysius' College has awarded the Richard Walker-Powell Medallion to an Aloysian graduate who has made significant and generous contributions as a man for others since leaving the College. Their endeavour should embody compassion, justice and service to those who are in need or 'on the edge' of our society.
The award is named after Richard Walker-Powell (SAC 1987) who was killed in a plane crash in Kosovo while working with the United Nations in 1999. He was 30 years of age. Richard was a kind and committed student who struggled with the academic orientation at St Aloysius' College. He worked for a period after leaving school, before completing a degree in Political Science at the Australian National University.
Inspired by Nelson Mandela, he went to work in South Africa and afterwards with the United Nations and the World Food Program. He lived and died helping those in need. In so many ways, Richard Walker-Powell is a wonderful model to put before the current students and staff. The recipients of the Medallion over the years exemplify the virtues we seek to promote at St Aloysius' College.
